The Itinerary of the Casablanca to Fez Tour
Your driver will pick you up in the morning from your accommodation in Casablanca. You will then make 300 kilometers, 3.5 hours drive to Fez in a comfortable private vehicle. This city is simply amazing, and I’m telling you, if you’re in Morocco, you cannot miss it! Fez has a rich history, stunning architecture, and a vibrant culture that will leave you in awe.
On your arrival in Fez, you will meet your guide for a visit of 4 hours who will lead you to the discovery of the old medina inscribed on the UNESCO world heritage. You will start with Bab Boujloud, also called blue door. Then visit the Medersa Bou Inania, a renowned theological college built by a merenid dynasty and El-Attarine, Koranic schools for religious schools, as well as the university and the Al-Karaouine mosque. Visit the Nejjarine Museum of Arts and Crafts and discover traditional tools, carpets, furniture and musical instruments.
First things first, let’s talk about the medina. The Fez medina is one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world, and it’s a labyrinth of narrow alleys, bustling souks, and hidden courtyards. Walking through the medina is like stepping back in time, and it’s an experience that you’ll never forget.
The medina is a melting pot of cultures and traditions, with artisans and craftsmen practising their trades passed down from generation to generation. You’ll see everything from leather tanners and ceramic makers to spice vendors and traditional tea houses. And trust me, the sights and smells will leave you in a sensory overload!
But the medina is more than just a shopping destination. It’s a living, breathing city with a vibrant energy that is contagious. You’ll find musicians and street performers, artists and vendors, all coming together to celebrate their shared heritage.
And let’s not forget about the incredible architecture in Fez. The city is renowned for its well-preserved medieval buildings, including the Al-Attarine Madrasa, a 14th-century Islamic school that is considered one of the finest examples of Moroccan architecture. It’s truly stunning, and I promise, you won’t be able to take your eyes off of it.
After a lunch break in one of the hundreds of restaurants in the medina, continue to the famous tanneries, where the leather is still transformed as it was hundreds of years ago. Watch the workers from the lookout and learn more about the different jobs, and even negotiate a new bag or belt later.
In the heart of the old town, the fascinating souks will draw you on a visit to a craftsman, pretty squares and long rows of stalls selling everything from fresh spices to artisanal products from all over the country. Before returning to Casablanca, visit the tombs of Merenid, a 14th century monument with magnificent views of the Sebou Valley. After visiting the tombs, start the return trip to Casablanca, where you will be dropped off around 18:00.
